Even if you've never seen or don't like opera, you should see the City Opera's production of "Margaret Garner. It is the story of an escaped slave who, upon recapture, kills her children rather than have them returned to slavery. The story was an important one in the run up to the civil war, in part because she was tried for "destruction of property" rather than "murder". As captured in this version, the opera comes closer to a tragedy, in the classic Greek sense, than any modern stage production I have ever scene. Well worth the effort for my Media Criticism students. Remaining performances are scheduled for Sept. 16, 20, 22, 26 and 29.
