Process theories of emotion

Focused around components of emotion
- precipitating events (objects, causes)
- appraisal
- physiological changes
- expression (action tendencies, action)
- regulation
Allow different emotions to be described and compared
Provide tools to describe "emotionlike" experiences
- Moods (no precipitating event)
- Sentiments (disposition to appraise)
Give us a basis for viewing emotion as a continuum
- Full blown emotion is rare
- but subsets are common

Some issues
- precipitating events are complex and often inobvious
  - effects of prior events and context
  - effects of predispositions and attributions
  - content versus relational content
