Small Group Spring2006 Session17

Groups got started on their individual papers and the relationship of those papers to the overall group project during the last two sessions. If you haven't been to class, I presume that you have been contacted by a group member. If you haven't been, you REALLY NEED to come to this class.

After determining the group names, Teams discussed and clarified their paper topics.

Group assignment due Tuesday: At least 15 "fresh" references (3 per group member), turned in as a single typewritten list. Try to get them into APA format, but I'll be somewhat flexible on that this time. A fresh reference is something no-one in the troup has read before. You can list the text for this course as a 17th and 18th reference, but they don't count as a part of this collection of 15. The same goes for texts you've read in your other communication courses. If its not new to you its not "fresh".

Structure of the short paper

The short paper should take the form of a five paragraph essay. Structure the essay as follows:
1. Paragraph 1 (Introduction): Provide a general introduction to your papers topic leading up to a thesis statement of the general form: "There are at least three interesting things that can be noted based on my reading of the research in the area of <your group's topic>."
2. Paragraph 2 (First thing): Explore the interesting thing that might be shared during the group presentation. What is the observation, theory, or research have to say about this thing that is interesting? What evidence is there that the observation, theory, or research is valid? These are just examples of the kinds of questions you might ask and answer.
3. Paragraph 3 (Second thing): Explore the second thing in much the same way as you explored the first.
4. Paragraph 4 (Recommendation 3): Provide the third thing in much the same way you explored the first two things.
5. Paragraph 5 (Conclusion): Revisit your thesis in the first sentence of your last paragraph. Then expand out to describe in general terms why its useful for people to know these things. In the last sentence or two, talk about what else you would like to research as an extension of this paper.
6. References in APA format.
Note that no group should have two people writing essays on the same topic. Note also that it may be a good thing to discuss your paper with the group as you do your research and prepare to write it.
