Closing comments Small Groups and an unending study of Communication
- You live through your communication with others
- Inevitably, you create closet theories of how it works
- One hopes that you learned some things in this course that will help you be a little more self-critical in those theories
- And that will make you more effective as a group participant
- For myself, I study Communication for a living.
- My focus, if you haven't figured it out already, is the structure of media and the messages that are inherent to those structures
- But lots of people actively study lots of elements of Communication, including everything we've covered here
- You can advance your study of communication within this department
- Interpersonal Communication
- Organizational Communication
- Intercultural Communication
- Persuasion
- Semantics
- Female/Male Communication
- Communication Relationships and Communities
- Advanced Interpersonal Communication
- Message Criticism
- And many more
- To some closing thoughts based on my work
Interpersonal Media: The Internet and our Time, Space and Scale Machines
- Media are built with technology to manage at least three dimensions:
- Scale (and Complexity)
- Space (and Selectivity)
- Time
- Memory
- Parallel Interaction
- Coming soon: Supersynchronous Interaction
- Media aren't built just with technology (mediators), but with:
- Characteristics like the above
- Uses
- Effects
- Practices
- Lets briefly discuss just a few "new media":
- cellular telephones
- Living the Clueless Moment
- And changing the way we interact
- We always thought of communication as a serial process
- Now we talk on the phone while we walk and talk with our friends
- Phones around the table
- family radios
- Staying in touch while skiing
- instant messenger
- Parallel interaction and media use
- Filling in the non-verbal gap
- emoticons
- personal names
- personal icons
- electronic mail
- chat rooms
- personal and commercial web sites
- Tech Media and Relationships
- Relationship Equals Sum Media Use:
