Computer Conference content and format translators, written in REXX, that imported/exported content to/from IBM Globenet and Prodigy, CompuServe, America Online, Network Newsgroup, Electronic Bulletin Board and other standard and proprietary computer conference formats, allowing content from all of these systems to be managed in a single computer conferencing environment for the purposes of providing electronic service and support. Used in the Globenet and ROME Electronic Service and Support Systems.
PARSMAIL. IBM Research Division, IBM Application Solutions Division, and IBM Global Services, 1991-1999. A rule-based mail interpreter, written in REXX, which, based on content rules, organizes incoming mail and LISTSERV content into folders, provides alerts (via pager or other means) based on e-mail based problem reports and high-priority mail arrivals, and throws away SPAM.
COREUP (1990-91). IBM Research Division. A REXX and C application that automatically synchronizes server content between both local and highly distributed servers. Used to automatically maintain CORE servers at dozens of IBM sites. Distributed as a part of an IBM Networking product.
With Hassan Bertal. Mirror Backup. IBM Research Division, 1989-91. A REXX and C application that enabled the automated backup of client workstations over a LAN.
With Ed Skorynko, Dave Chess, and John Alvord. IBMPC Monitoring, Reviewing, and Maintenance Software. IBM Research, IBM Application Solutions Division, and IBM Global Services, 1986-1999. Rule-based decision making software, written in REXX, which improved IBMPC Computer Conference administrative productivity by over 95%, reducing 2+ headcount of full-time work to less than an hour of work per day. Critical in controlling the overhead costs of computer conferencing in IBM. Used in the IBM TALKLINK on-line service. Distributed as a part of the IBM TOOLSRUN customer offering.
With Hassan Bertal. Heuristic Shell (HSHELL). IBM Research, 1988-89. C, with macro programming in REXX and PROLOG. A command line shell which tracked user commands looking for patterns. When commands are entered in repetitive sequence, the user is notified and given the opportunity of executing the remaining sequence automatically. Also enabled the execution of REXX and PROLOG commands and macros directly from the command line.
With Alain Benoix. FSORT. IBM Research, 1988. An intelligent C language sort engine which, given a set of field descriptions, recognizes field content types in open format input data, organizes that content into columns based on content type, and sorts the data based on the content of selected field. Concept later incorporated into IBM sort product.
With Alain Benoix. RXPM. IBM Research, 1988. C and REXX. Pioneered the control of Operating System User Interface APIs from Shell Scripting Languages and Interpreters. In this implementation, OS/2 Presentation Manager API's were exposed such that GUI interfaces could be constructed and controlled from a REXX program. Sought by IBM PSP as an OS/2 deliverable. Predates, and arguably provides a starting point for, the IBM SOM and Microsoft COM products.
With Alain Benoix. REXXTRAN. IBM Research, 1988. C and REXX. First program to map interpretive languages to dynamic link libraries without any requirement of special coding and/or compile options. Sought by IBM PSP as an OS/2 deliverable. Predates, and arguably provides a starting point for, the IBM SOM and Microsoft COM products.
With Eric Hesse, and others. BBMODEL. IBM Research and IBM Application Software Division. A user interface modeling system, built in EI and configurable with an SGML tag language. Used to model an IBM Editor product. Provides source code and conceptual basis for an IBM user interface modeling and generation system and, through it, a number of IBM products, including many Kiosk offerings.
With Brian Walsh. E2TEXT and Active Intent Interpretation. IBM Research and IBM Applications Software Division, 1987-91. An agent interpreter, written in the EI language, which translates typewriter style keystrokes into SGML or similar tag-based formatting description languages. A proof of concept that was subsequently patented by IBM and incorporated into an IBM Word Processing product. The general concept of E2TEXT, in a somewhat simplified form, is realized in the design of WIKI collaborative composition software.
PAGE. IBM Research Division, 1986-88. An agent interpreter, written in PASCAL and later ported to C, which intelligently reformats plain text for printing.
With Jay Tunkel, Clark Maurer, and others. OS/2 System Editor, 1986. IBM Research Division and IBM Personal Software Products Division. A C language editor that provides basic editing functionality in a full screen or windows user interface. Shipped with OS/2.
E2SURVEY. IBM Research Division, 1986. An on-line test and survey program, written in the EI language, that runs on Personal Computers under DOS. Used to conduct the IBMPC User Surveys, IBM Research Division Surveys, IBM Corporate Surveys, among many others. Used as a part of an automated test administration and grading system in 1987.
DARWIN. IBM Research Division, 1986. A prototype intelligent desktop, written in C and EI, that semi-automatically organizes programs, application data, and e-mail within a project framework, exposing related files, e-mail and associated programs when a user starts work on a particular project.
With Alain Benoix. Protocol Hider. IBM Research, 1996-1988. A Network Protocol Translator, written in C, which provides transparent access to host and server systems using a variety of protocols using a single five function API (logon/open, list, get, put, and close/logout). Used in the IBM LaMail product, where it provided access to VM, UNIX, and other mailboxes through a single interface, and the DARWIN prototype, where it provided access to VM and UNIX mailboxes as well as VM, UNIX, and PC-DOS files through a single listing of the mail and files associated with a given project.
With Ted Diment, and Richard Redpath. BURT. IBM Research and IBM Storage Technology Division, 1985-87. A semi-automated and extremely easy to use backup program, written in C, for PC’s. Delivered with the IBM 3363 Optical Drive as BURT3363.
E2DRAW. IBM Research Division, 1985. An intelligent line drawing tool, written in EI, for editors that modifies the character drawn when lines intersect in the drawing process. Concept adopted in other editors and in IBM Typewriters.
With Denis LaCroix and Richard Redpath. STP. IBM Research Division, 1985. A subdirectory tree management program, written in PASCAL and later ported to C, which pioneered the direct manipulation of subdirectory structures from a full-screen user interface. Source code used as a basis for the DOS Shell, OS/2 File Manager, and MicroSoft Windows File Manager products.
With Clark Maurer. ME. IBM Research Division, 1985. Possibly the first editor with a end user configurable menu bar. Combines and enhances the function of E and EASYMENU with a REXX-based interpretive language (EI). Provides the source code basis for the E3, EOS2, EPM, and OS/2 Enhanced editors (the latter an IBM product both as a part of OS/2 and as the initial editor component of IBM’s VisualAge programming environments). The EI language, UI, and other elements are retained today in the SLICK editor from MicroEdge. Written in Pascal.
With Ted Diment and Richard Redpath. MenuCalc (1985). A PC pop-up calculator that provides a variety of formula management capabilities. A source code successor ships as a part of OS/2. Written in C.
With Clark Maurer. E. IBM Research Division, 1984. A text editor with user interface elements that are highly optimized to writing documents. Written in PASCAL with minimal configurability, this editor is based on the screen layout of Personal Editor and the user interface definitions of the PEAccess Macro Set. The starting point for the E family of editors, including ME, E2, EOS2, OS/2 System Editor, EPM, OS/2 Enhanced Editor, Slick, and a number of other user-interface clones.
With Michael Lippert and Davis Foulger. HELP. IBM Research Division. One of the first PC-based Hypertext systems, HELP pioneered the concept, later made an industry standard by HTML, of describing hypermedia content using tag-based markup. HELP markup is almost indistinguishable from HTML, but a relationship between the systems cannot be proven. HELP does provide the basis for a number of products, however, including an IBM Banking System online help capability and a U.S. Air Force fighter on-line repair manual. It is the prototype, moreover, for OS/2 Help Manager. Written in PASCAL and later ported to C.
With Clark Maurer. EasyMenu. IBM Research, 1993. An end user configurable PC menuing system. Provides the basic model for how most windowing programs are organized today, with a window name, menu bar, tool tips capability, and pull down menus, and other elements. In combination with HELP, makes the Yorktown PC User’s Workbench possible. Written in PASCAL.
With Clark Maurer and Richard Redpath. File Manager, IBM Research Division, 1984. A File Management program, written in PASCAL and later ported to C, which pioneered the direct manipulation of subdirectory structures from a full-screen user interface. Source code used as a basis for the DOS Shell, OS/2 File Manager, and MicroSoft Windows File Manager products.
With George Novis. Multi-Instrument Communication Protocol Workstation Driver. Written in 69000 Assembler, provided serial port based LAN capabilities for a daisy chain of computers and laboratory instruments. IBM Instruments, 1993. An IBM product.
Computer Synchronized Conversation Prototypes, 1982. A series of experiments in PC-based near-synchronous communication over asynchronous lines. Distributed as a series of terminal emulators optimized for computer conference and chat interaction on bulletin boards, the Source, and CompuServe. A starting point for my research on computer-mediated communication. Written in BASIC.

Systems

With development team. LOOKOUT. Empirix (initially Teradyne/RSW Software). A web site or other network service monitoring product that provides detailed network topography and performance information on end user connections to the site, allowing web site service and support personnel to rapidly diagnose the locus of web site performance problems. An n-tier architecture system, with elements located at the web/service site, a database server, and client desktops. Resolves network routers and end users to broad geographic locales. Well received by customers in initial demonstrations.
With Peter Schmidt, Jay Opperman, David Tuttle, and Development Team. NetFlare. Teradyne/NorthStar Internetworking and Teradyne Broadcast Division. An end user network connectivity diagnosis and repair system that enables users with Internet connectivity problems to connect to a special (the Internet Diagnostic Unit or IDU) from a web-based client user interface. Tests initiated on the client and performed on the IDU diagnose the connectivity problem and, via a rule-based decision logic, recommend repair procedures. Currently a Teradyne Broadcast Division product.
With Don Willenborg and the architecture, development, operations, test, and market planning teams. IBM Business Partner Systems Infrastructure. IBM Global Services, IBM Channels Marketing, IBM Customer Relationship Management, IBM CIO’s Office, 1997-99. IBM’s e-business channel to its business partners, which account for over 30% of IBM’s annual revenue, the IBM BPS Infrastructure was one of the first sites on the Internet to do over $1 billion in e-commerce revenue. Comprised of hundreds of applications and a library of over 100,000 documents managed on over 100 servers.
With Colin Harrison, Steve Brady, Asser Tantawi and Development Team. MultiMedia Digital Community. IBM Research Division, 1996-97. An enhanced teleconferencing system comprised of teleconferencing switch, central web server, and client browser software in which the web browser provides conference data, a variety of enhanced teleconference control function, and a shared view of presentation or web content. Sold by IBM as TurboConferencing.
With Robert Albano and Development, Operations, and Marketing Teams. ROME, IBM Application Services Division, 1994-1995. An enhanced version of GLOBENET, but offered to paying customers as a service offering the brief run of the IBM Application Services Division.
With Robert Albano, Jerry Waldbaum, and Development and Operations Teams. GLOBENET, IBM Research, IBM Personal Software Products, IBM Application Solutions Division, IBM Global Services, 1993-98. An electronic service and support tool used by almost every division of IBM. Provided a 30% or greater productivity increment for product service and support teams and even greater cost and productivity increments when compared with telephone customer service and support. Comprised of a client application, a distributed server network inside IBM, a central server operation, and computer conferences on Prodigy, CompuServe, Internet Newsgroups, IBM Talklink, America Online, Electronic Bulletin Boards, and other publicly accessible systems.
With Dave Slauson, Robert Albano, Dennis Johnson and development and operations teams. OS2BBS/TALKLINK, IBM Research, IBM Personal Software Products, IBM Service Division, 1991-99. An IBM online service, comprised of a dial-in server/network infrastructure, an end user client, and the IBM internal forum infrastructure. Allowed IBM customers to participate in a special subset of IBM forums known as CFORUMs. Initially opened as OS2BBS in support of the OS/2 operating system and later expanded, under the name TALKLINK, to support a broad range of IBM products and services.
With Gerald Waldbaum, John Alvord, Tom Rogers, Davis Foulger, and development and operations teams. CORE OS/2 Research Environment, IBM Research Division, 1987-91. One of the first local area network based client/server infrastructures, CORE provided client OS/2 workstations to a broad range of network services, including a shared and maintained software environment, electronic library of documents and software, computer conferencing facilities, backup services, and other applications. Marketed to customers as Netdoor.
With Whit Wyant, Clark Maurer, Jerry Waldbaum, and others. Yorktown PC User's Workbench. IBM Research Division, 1984-87. One of the first predefined and preinstalled software environments for PC’s, the Yorktown PC Users Workbench provided a complete suite of editing, spreadsheet, database, graphics, communications, and system management tools, all packaged within a consistent user interface framework with on-line help and documentation. As would be the case, a few months later, with the MacIntosh, Yorktown PC User’s Workbench users could frequently plug their machine in and go to work without doing any additional software installations. Today this is considered the norm. In 1984 it was almost unheard of. Although never marketed by IBM, the Workbench was used broadly inside IBM and distributed to many IBM customers. Over 30 other IBM software environments adapted the Workbench tools and framework to the specific needs of other IBM divisions and locations. The workbench has been credited, moreover, as the prototype for IBM’s OfficeVision product.
With Dave Chess, Bob Cronin, Jerry Waldbaum, Ed Skorynko, John Alvord, and many others. IBM Forum Infrastructure. IBM, 1983-99. With, at its peak, over 200 shadows, over 8000 discussion forums, several thousand software packages, and new contribution rates in excess of several thousand per day, IBM’s Forum Infrastructure, and the IBMPC computer conference facility and PCTOOLS software library in particular, were probably the largest computer conference and library system in the world for a few years in the mid-to-late 1980’s. It was certainly the first such system to not only reach critical mass, but to reach the upper turn of the diffusion of innovation curve, with over a third of all IBM employees regularly participating in conferences, and almost all employees making use of the electronic library facilities.
